Marketing 101 - No to Low Cost

In today's economy, there is something to be said for keeping overhead costs around the $Free.99 level as much as possible. For the newly self-published author, it's even more important so you can maximize your self-publishing investment.

Even now, 15 years in, I am on a tight budget when it comes to marketing my books. I want to spend more money on making the actual book the best it can be, so I'm down for spending relatively top dollar on editing and cover design - than I do on the marketing. Yes, to make money I need to get the word out about my books but there are ways to do that that don't break the bank.

In this month's blog series, I'll be sharing ideas on how to market your books at different price points. These will, in no way be exhaustive and I highly suggest you explore additional ways that align with your values, budget, and book market. Use these blogs as a jumping-off point in addition to a road map of marketing tools to use on your self-publishing journey.

$ Free.99 - Ideas that are No- to Low-cost

  • Tell everyone you know about your book and ask them to spread the word.

  • Make t-shirts - simple iron decals you can design then print and iron on a tee shirt or two that you already own. Wear them when you're out and about.

  • Make flyers and post (with permission as needed) around the neighborhood. You can design some nice-looking flyers in Canva that you can then print off at home or at a print shop.

  • Set up an online sales page. There are free versions of a bunch of software that allow you to design and post a free landing/sales page. Google "free sales page" to find an option that suits you

  • Ask to be featured on a friend/family member's social media, podcast, and or blog.

Alright - we're off to a good start. Share any ideas you'd like to add to this category in the comments below. Then I'll see you back here next week for, at least, five more ideas in the mid-range category.

Have a great rest of the week, and as always, sending light & inspiration,

Dana.

Marketing 101 - Mid Budget

I'm defining "mid-budget" as between $300 - $500. This could be a one-time spend or what you can afford to do monthly. However it works out when you find yourself with a good amount of dollars to put
